Bamboo microscopes-made in India
Thursday, November 08, 2007 @ 1:32 PM  ¦ 0 comments  ¦ StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!  ¦

In a remote village in eastern India, dozens of underprivileged children are for the first time marveling at the elaborate details of flower petals with the help of a microscope—made out of bamboo.

Fitted with a x20 lens, the light, compact and ecofriendly microscope is proving a boon for dozens of cash-strapped schools, granting students firsthand access to an otherwise unaffordable scientific tool.

This nifty device is a product of the creative minds at JodoGyan founded in 1999 by Usha Menon, a government researcher.

Priced at 150 rupees (roughly $4), the microscope is just one of the educational tools created by Jodo Gyan, literally translated as 'linking knowledge'. Other tools include mathematical card and board games and sticky geometric shapes in a variety of colors. The 30-member group has also led more than 700 teacher-training workshops and runs an alternative primary school that enrolls 54 underprivileged students.(via nature and BB)

Do You Know Who Controls Your Cell Phone?
Thursday, November 01, 2007 @ 1:15 PM  ¦ 0 comments  ¦ StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!  ¦
Now Cell phones are not mere cell phones, they are more than that, a mini computer. You can send email and browse the web, and many have built-in storage and memory. As a result, our phones contain all sorts of sensitive information like contacts, passwords for the systems you use ,the websites you visit etc.,

Most of us don't consider our phones a security risk. While computers are protected by firewalls and loaded up with the latest antivirus software, many of us even, don't use password to protect our Cell phones.

Do you know that, it may take only five seconds for a smart hacker to install an undetectable piece of code on your cellphone that can send a copy of every message received to a Web site he controls?

SMS, or text messages, are one way a hacker can implant code on an unsuspecting phone. Unlike email, where it's possible to see who the sender is and what the content of the message is before you open it, a text message requires the phone owner to open it to learn that information. By then, the hacker's code is already on the phone.(via BT)

What's the solution, then? Read here
