Are you using free online storage services to backup your files?

If you are using free online storage space to backup your files, here is a scary news from Poonam and Dr. Mike.

Poonam and Dr. Mike who had stored their data in mediamax under free account may lose their files permanantly unless they upgrade it to a premium account as Mediamax (now thelinkup ) asked all the existing free members to upgrade to a premium account otherwise their files will be removed permanently.

Another company called Divshare also have stopped the service to the visitors from Asia because online advertising was weak in that region. The affected countries are: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Mongolia.

This clearly shows that we should not use free online storage services as backup solution for our data. It is always better to backup our files locally like DVD or USB.

So next time you backup your files online for free, think again.

Thanks Amit, Poonam and Dr. Mike.

Companies like MediaMax did not have a well thought out business model. Especially to hold customers data at ransom for upgrade. That was not good for our industry (online storage).

We at http://www.myotherdrive.com do offer free accounts, however, we also have very low cost paid accounts.

Check out our site if you are unhappy with MediaMax (or any other online storage company).

Our online storage is not just for storage offsite, but you can also link to the content (URL linking for eBay, Facebook) or a portion of the content. You can create communities (groups) and share only to those (like a sports league). This combination of price, features, and functionality is a winning model.

    Best regards,
    John DeRegnaucourt
