Convert any text, pdf, ppt, webpages into audio online with readthewords.com
Thursday, April 03, 2008 @ 6:35 PM  ¦ 0 comments  ¦ StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!  ¦
Readthewords is a simple free web application that converts any text document(PDF, Word, plain text, PowerPoint, RSS feeds, emails, web pages) writeen in English,Spanish or French to mp3 file which can be downloaded to your ipod or any flash drive. Registration is required but it takes only a minute to create.

The conversion speed is amazing compared to spokentext and Vozme as readthewords takes only few minutes to convert 1 hour recording. You can also embed your recording in your website or blog. See the example below.

How it works?

1. After registration, upload any document from your desktop or just enter the URL of the webpage or rss feeds.

2. Listen to sample voice readers before you select one from 15 different voices like a US male voice, UK female voice etc.,

3. After selecting the voice, you can adjust the speed of the voice reader. It may take only few minutes to convert your document to audio file. The best part is you need not wait for conversion to complete as it will send you an email when the recording is done and MP3 is ready to download.

Charge your iPod using onion-fake or real?!
Monday, February 25, 2008 @ 6:06 PM  ¦ 0 comments  ¦ StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!  ¦
One of the most popular dailies New Indian express reports that two students from Bangalore-India, M Chandra Shekar (14) and CJ Ajay (15) , claims to have discovered that onions can be used to charge batteries and have displayed this capability to charge an iPod at the Young Inventors’ Meet, the eighth exhibition of creative ideas organised by Jawarhalal Nehru Planetarium and Rotary Club of Bangalore on Sunday 24th February 2008.

How it works?

Shekar and Ajay demonstrated how onion with a branded citric-ginger juice acting as electrolyte, could charge an iPod.

The boys drilled a see-through hole through the onion with a screwdriver and kept the bulbous vegetable dipped in the juice for an hour.

The bottom of the onion, neatly wiped, was connected to the freeend of the iPod’s USB cord to successfully charge the gizmo for 30 minutes.

The charge was recorded on a voltmeter.Ajay reasoned that the acidic elements of onion react with electrolytes in the juice to produce small electric charges.

This crude, but handy, method was invented by the two in merely 45 days. “We conducted many experiments and concluded that it worked the best with the onions,” said Ajay and Shekar.

After reading this story, I googled to check whether this is genuine or not ? But most of the feedback says this is fake.

Since I have not experimented this, So I can'nt say whether this is fake or real.

If you have tested or heard this before, share your comments [source link].

Convert text into audio online
Wednesday, December 19, 2007 @ 7:52 PM  ¦ 0 comments  ¦ StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!  ¦
Most people, especially editors, bloggers, researchers who are hooked to PC, read lot of articles, news items in the web media. Reading articles in news papers, books may not strain your eyes even if you read for a long time but reading the stuff online in the medias like computer,Laptop or Kindle ebook reader for a long time may affect your eyes.

To avoid stress on eyes while reading online, many of you may suggest to take a short break after every 30 minutes and stare at any object(may be greens better) for sometime or do some stretching exerciese or just go for walk. But most of us being lazy don't follow those suggestions and continue to read if the stuff is really interesting.

So what may be the best approach to de-stress your eyes? My suggestion is don't read the stuff but listen to it wherever feasible. I mean convert the text into speech and listen to it. You can carry converted audio books in your mobile or ipods and listen whenever you travel.

Vozme and spokentext are the two web based text to speech converters. Both are completely free.

Vozme is a simple online ‘text to speech’ program that lets you type-in any English or Spanish or Italian text and then play it as an audio stream. The best thing is you can dowload and save the audio stream as standard MP3 files. You can store the audio files in your mobile or iPod to listen while travelling.

And if you are running a blog or website, you can add Vozme to your website or blog and let your readers download/listen to posts as an audio stream. Moreover, no registration is required to avail this service. [via]

spokentext is also a web-based text to speech converter that can take almost any text document (PDF, Word, plain text, PowerPoint, RSS feeds, emails, web pages, etc.) and convert it to audio file. This file can be shared online with others and also downloaded as an iPod book or regular MP3 file. Here you need to register to record your text unlike Vozme . Check out more features here.

How do you avoid stress on your eyes? let us know in the comments section.

Carry your computer in your pocket
Wednesday, December 05, 2007 @ 7:30 PM  ¦ 0 comments  ¦ StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!  ¦
Consider this situation. You are away from office/home for some better reason (without carrying laptop). You get a call from your boss asking you to make some correctons in one of the important CAD drawings and sendback the revised one to him immediately. Now you rush to nearby cybercafe or friends's house(if possible) and plug your USB into the computer to access the CAD diagram but unfortunately AutoCAD software is not installed in that computer to edit the CAD drawing. Now, what will you do?

Just imagine how nice it would be if you are able to carry your own computer in your pocket.

Well, your dreams can come true with Mojopac- truly a brilliant brilliant tool (as rightly said by Amit in his blog) that very-easily clones your existing computing environment onto any USB Drive. That is, you can carry all your favorite software applications (and their settings), Office files, emails and everything else with you on a portable drive like USB or iPod or a USB based cell phone".

You can see Mojopac Video Demo here and Download Mojopac here
