One of the most popular dailies New Indian express reports that two students from Bangalore-India, M Chandra Shekar (14) and CJ Ajay (15) , claims to have discovered that onions can be used to charge batteries and have displayed this capability to charge an iPod at the Young Inventors’ Meet, the eighth exhibition of creative ideas organised by Jawarhalal Nehru Planetarium and Rotary Club of Bangalore on Sunday 24th February 2008. How it works?
Shekar and Ajay demonstrated how onion with a branded citric-ginger juice acting as electrolyte, could charge an iPod.
The boys drilled a see-through hole through the onion with a screwdriver and kept the bulbous vegetable dipped in the juice for an hour.
The bottom of the onion, neatly wiped, was connected to the freeend of the iPod’s USB cord to successfully charge the gizmo for 30 minutes.
The charge was recorded on a voltmeter.Ajay reasoned that the acidic elements of onion react with electrolytes in the juice to produce small electric charges.
This crude, but handy, method was invented by the two in merely 45 days. “We conducted many experiments and concluded that it worked the best with the onions,” said Ajay and Shekar.
After reading this story, I googled to check whether this is genuine or not ? But most of the feedback says this is fake.
Since I have not experimented this, So I can'nt say whether this is fake or real.
